There’s something about August that always feels like a fresh start. Summer isn’t quite over, but we begin thinking about getting back into routines, preparing for the busy fall season, and taking better care of ourselves. As many women in Milton and the South Shore, we’re often ready to “get back on track.” But before you set a new goal or promise yourself you’ll finally lose those extra pounds, I’d like to ask you one question:
How are you going to measure your progress?
If your first thought is, “I’ll step on the scale,” I’d like to challenge you to think differently.
After more than 30 years of working with women, I’ve learned that the scale tells us only a small part of the story – whether they are in their twenties, their fifties or beyond. Some women look healthy but are surprised to learn they have lower muscle mass and higher body fat than expected, just as often, I’ve worked with those who haven’t lost a pound but have steadily gained muscle, increased their strength, and feel better than they have in years.
The scale can’t tell the difference.
That’s why this fall, I want to see more women focus on building a stronger, healthier body instead of simply chasing a lower number. The first step is knowing where you’re starting.
Know Your Starting Point: Your Body Composition Baseline
Throughout August, we’re offering a complimentary Body Composition Baseline at our Milton studio. This simple assessment gives you a clear picture beyond what a traditional scale can tell you, including:
- Lean muscle mass
- Body fat percentage
- Visceral fat levels
- Metabolic/body age

Think of it as your personal roadmap. Once you know your baseline, you can make smarter choices and track meaningful progress over time. Whether your goal is to build strength, improve energy, change your body composition, or simply feel your best, having the right data makes all the difference.
Five Habits to Build a Stronger You This Fall
1. Focus on Strength, Not Just Weight Muscle is one of the best investments you can make in your health. It supports your metabolism, helps protect your bones, improves balance, increases energy, and makes everyday activities easier. Whether you’re 25 or 75, building and maintaining muscle should be part of your wellness plan.
2. Fuel Your Body Well Food isn’t just about calories—it’s about giving your body the nutrients it needs to feel and perform its best. Prioritizing protein, drinking enough water, and choosing nourishing foods can help support muscle growth, recovery, and steady energy. Small choices, repeated consistently, create big changes.
3. Make Movement a Non-Negotiable You don’t have to be perfect to make progress. At Fitness Unlimited, we offer everything from small-group fitness classes in Milton to targeted Pilates sessions designed for core stability, mobility, and joint-friendly conditioning. Whether it’s a strength circuit, a reformer Pilates flow, or a brisk walk with a friend—all of it counts. The goal isn’t to do everything; it’s to keep showing up. Consistency will always matter more than perfection. Explore our class schedule
4. Take Care of Yourself Without Feeling Guilty As women, we’re often the ones caring for everyone else. This fall, remember that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. When you feel stronger and healthier, you have more energy for the people and things you love.
5. Surround Yourself with Support Healthy habits are easier to maintain when you’re not doing them alone. One of my favourite things about our club is watching women encourage one another, celebrate successes, and build friendships along the way. That sense of community is just as important as the workout itself.
