The Quickest Way to See Results? Make a plan!

By Jillian Boston, Personal Trainer & Fitness Nutrition Specialist

Spring is here, woohoo! I have had SO many people say to me they are ready to dust off their winter blues and spring into action with their health and fitness goals. All this talk is great but in order to see your goals come to fruition you need to make a plan. Think of a plan as the road map to getting to your goals. Without the map you’re lost and won’t be able to look back and see how far you’ve come. There are many reasons plans are fantastic and below we’ve spelled out the top reasons they are so beneficial:

Provide a clear vision for your goals – We often have goals floating around in our head with no real purpose behind them. They are kind of just there. When we decide to create a plan to reach a goal it transforms that goal from a thought to a real thing. Once we actually see that goal written down it allows us the space to visualize what it’s like to actually have the goal become a reality. Realizing that visualization is what helps us make that goal clear because we know exactly how we want to feel.

Put the plan in motion: Next time a goal comes to mind, write it down on a piece of paper or in a notebook. Then write down how you would feel if you reached that goal. Once you know how you want to feel, visualize and write down action steps to help you get there.

Provide motivation and commitment: Creating a plan is the easiest way to commit to your goals. Instead of just thinking about your goals you’ve taken the time to figure out how to get to that goal. This also helps increase motivation because the small steps outlined in the plan make the goal more achievable. Sometimes when we look at the whole picture of the goal it seems almost impossible to get there but when we break it down into small action steps it feels less overwhelming and more feasible to achieve.

Put the plan in motion: Your homework for today is to take one action step towards reaching the goal that you are currently thinking about. I know you visualized it or thought about it while reading the last bullet point, now write down that action step and get to it! I promise you can do it and it is a lot easier than you think.

Provide a timeline: For all your procrastinators out there (I’m including myself in this haha), writing out a plan helps you set specific dates to have things done by. So whether you get it done in advance or with two minutes left to spare you still completed an action step towards your goal! You also get to see your goal from a bird’s eye view of how long it will take you to get there. This helps fuel the fire because you know that your goal has an end date!

Put the plan in motion: Map out the timeline you’d like to achieve your goal buy and write down at least 4 “due dates” for your actions items to be completed by. I can’t wait to see all that you accomplish by planning out your goals!

Hopefully by putting your plan in motion with the bullet points above you are well on your way to reaching your Spring goals…
